Biography
Gothelon Ier, basic duke and of High-Lotharingie, the House of the Ardennes, died in 1044. If Godefroy II succeeded his/her father into High-Lotharingie, the situation of the Low-Lotharingie and less clear.Certain historians mention another son, Gothelon II, which would have succeeded his/her father and would have died in 1046, of other say that the emperor Henri III did not name a holder for the duchy. In any case, Godefroy II, irritated not to have also received the Lowone, revolted in 1046.
Overcome, the Highone will be withdrawn to him and entrusted to Adalbert of Alsace, but Godefroy continued the fight and killed Adalbert with the battle of Thuin. That did not enable him to recover its duchy, because Henri III immediately named Gerard of Alsace like duke of Lorraine.
Errors of historians: Longwy and its family
About 1960, Szabolcs de Vajay, allotted to him, on the basis of two documents, the county of Longwy and the known as one married to Clémence, girl of the count de Foix and father of two girls, Etiennette, married to Guillaume, count de Bourgogne, and Ermesinde, married to Guillaume VII, duke of Aquitaine. Its opinion was followed by several historians, but Szabolcs de Vajay was warned thereafter that this theory was based on mistakes in interpretation of the consulted documents. It results from it that the paternity of these two girls is abandoned (Etiennette was now attached rather to the house of Barcelona; and Ermesinde and the county of Longwy is connected to the house of Luxembourg). Clemence, having been given as marries for explains the appearance of this first name among the girls of Etiennette and of Ermesinde, any more place does not have to be regarded as the wife of Adalbert. With final, one does not know if Adalbert married and, in this case, the name of this wife and if there were girls.
