Ada Ciganlija

Ada Ciganlija , in Serb Cyrillic АдаЦиганлија, is an island of Serbia located on the Save and a district of Belgrade located in the municipality of Čukarica.

Ada Ciganlija is located at 4 km of the confluence between Save and the the Danube, close to the center of Belgrade. The island covers a surface of 8 km. It has a beach along the " lake Sava" and offers many activities of leisure, which in fact a place of walk privileged for Belgradois.

In 1821, the island was issued quite national by the prince Miloš Obrenović; it is managed today by the municipal government via the state enterprise " Ada Ciganlija" (JP " Ada Ciganlija"), which is responsible for the public safety and which maintains the structures of leisure and the beach. Certain private companies also invested there (for example, by building a golf there).

Ada Ciganlija, which is an oasis of nature in a very urbanized zone, offers a single ecosystem. The island is covered by a forest made up of Chêne S, of Orme S and of Saule S. One finds there Renard S, Lapin S and stag S, as well as many species of Amphibien S, insects and birds. Thus the island shelters a particularly threatened species, the Cormoran Pygmy (Phalacrocorax pygmeus), which comes to winter in Belgrade. Because of its independent ecosystem, Ada Ciganlija enjoys a particular Microclimat.

Although Ada Ciganlija is a river island, since 1967, the authorities started to connect it to the ground on the side of the city by two dams. The island thus became a kind of Presqu'île. The lake thus formed, called the lake Sava, constitutes an invaluable drinking water tank for Belgrade. It is along this lake that the beach is located.

The City and the State have the project to build a new bridge on the Save, which would pass to the east of the island. This project caused protests on behalf of the friends of nature but its construction must start in 2007.
