Acute accent

The acute accent is a Diacritique of the Latin alphabet inherited the Greek acute accent. It makes its first appearances in French at the 16th century, introduced by Geoffroy Tory in 1529.

French

In French, the acute accent is placed on the letter E (“E”) to distinguish the Phonème with the stamp closed /e/ from the phoneme/ə/. One exceptionally meets it on E open in: aim' E I, I prot E managed and in certain words as all E gemmates, év E nement (deliveries all E gemmate, év E nement).

Note: the decree of December 28th, 1976 and the corrections of 1990 authorize the grave accent instead of the acute accent whenever the pronunciation makes hear a E open: event, I will protect.

Spanish

Áá, Éé, Íí, Óó, Úú.

It indicates the tonic accents “irregular” compared to the current accented structure. For example: explicación (“explanation”), típico (“typical”).

It makes it possible moreover to distinguish from the Homophone S, in particular the pronouns interrogative and exclamative (accentuated) of the relative pronoun (not accentuated). It is in this case a true diacritic use. For example:

¿ That dice? : “That does he say? ”.
Lo that dice : “What he says”.

Among the other cases you (reflexive pronoun “you”) and t-piece number (“the”), (reflexive pronoun “”) and (“would be” or “I know”), and farmhouse (“but”) and más (“more”).

Vietnamese

In the writing Vietnamese Quôc ngu, the acute accent is called “sắc” and indicates a rising intonation.

Serbo-Croatian

“ć” decides like one T wet " ty".

On a French keyboard, there does not exist for the stressing of C of combination of keys as for the E (E = Alt+0201) or has (Á = Alt+0193). But one can use in language HTML the code & #263; to write a tiny ć and the code & #262; to write Ć capital letter.

International Phonetic Alphabet

On any symbol of vowel (or consonant vocalized), it indicates a Tonème high register.

Transcription in ASCII

The Codage of characters ASCII does not contain an accented accentuated letter. When it is only coding available, some simulate the acute accent while placing a apostrophizes behind the letter: for example by writing “e' te'” for “summer”. It is besides this solution which was adopted for VIQR.
