Activate Denial System

The Active Denial System (ADS) is a system of nonlethal Armes with energy directed (microwaves) developed for the American Armée, by Raytheon. It is a powerful transmitter of millimetre-length wave used to disperse a crowd (the " goodbye effect").

Operation

The ADS emits an electromagnetic beam of Onde of a frequency of 95 GHz (3 mm) towards a subject. When the waves touch the skin, the energy of the waves is transformed into heat in contact with the water molecules of the skin. A 2 seconds impulse would carry the skin until a temperature of approximately 55°C, causing an intense feeling of very painful burn. One would need an exposure to the 250 seconds beam to burn the skin.

History

  • the ADS was developed in secrecy during 10 years at a cost of 40 million dollars. Its existence was revealed in 2001, but the majority of the details on the effects of the ADS on the human ones remain classified.
  • September 22nd 2004 Raytheon obtained a license FCC to make a demonstration of technology to the security forces, at the soldiers and organizations of safety measures

  • the October 4th 2004 the Department of Defense of the United States publishes information of contract following:

Communications and Power Industries (CPI), Palto Viola, Calif., is being awarded have costs-reimbursement $6,377,762, cost-plus fixed-price contract. The contractor shall design, build, test, and delivery has two to 2.5 megawatt, high efficiency, continuous wave (CW) 95 gigahertz millimeter wave system source. Extensive The contractor shall perform modeling, maximum simulation, experiments, and testing to the capabilities off to their facilities (which shall No less than one megawatt peak RF output) that will ascertain the final CW capabilities off the source. The contractor also shall provide input for the requirements for the government' S test stand, which will serf ace has full power facility in the future. At this time, $900,000 off the funds has been obliged. This work will Be supplements by January 2009. Negotiations were completed September 2004. The Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Bases, New Mexico City, is the contracting activity (FA9451-04-C-0298).
  • In January 2007, a first unit of USAF is equipped with this apparatus.
