Actium (today Punta) is the ancient name of a Promontoire in the north of Acarnanie (Greece) to the mouth of the Sine Ambracius (Golfe of Arta) in the west of Anactorium, where an old temple of Apollon Actius was, or actiaque, as well as a small town, or rather village, name of Actium.
Actium remains famous for the Bataille of Actium, victory naval that Octave gained there over Antoine, on September 2nd -31 (723 of Rome), and who put an end to the Roman republic. In memory of this battle, Octave builds the town of Nicopolis (of the Greek Nike , the Victoire ) opposite Actium, raised the actiaque temple of Apollo and renewed the Plays actiaques ( Ludi Actiaci ), by transferring them to Rome: these plays, composed of gymnastic exercises, equestrian combat and concerts, were celebrated every five years. The victory of Actium became starting point the one particular era, known as actiaque Ère ( Actiaca Aera ).
