Action Schools

Action Schools (probably also called “Operation Delta”) is an humanitarian operation of scale launched in 1985 - 1986 by Daniel Balavoine, Richard Berry, Lionel Rotcage, Michel Berger and France Gall in the wake of famous the Band Aid of Bob Geldof. This operation caused the creation of thousands of committees in the schools and colleges French (until 13  000 according to Lionel Rotcage), becoming a transitory social phenomenon which contributed to the awakening of the Humanitarian action for a whole generation of French, as well as the Resto du coeur, founded at the same time.

Genesis of the operation

Daniel Balavoine, large amateur of cars and rallys, takes part in the Rallye Paris-Dakar in 1983 and 1984. Its discovery of the Africa makes him follow another combat, that of the poverty and the famine of this continent. In 1985, it attends the concert Band Aid. Then it takes part in the French concert for the Ethiopia given to Courneuve the October 13rd 1985.

About thirty passed, Daniel Balavoine wishes to launch out in more constructive projects in agreement with its humanistic ideas. With its accomplice Michel Berger and France Gall, it founds an association, Action Schools , intended to mobilize the French schoolboys against the hunger in Africa. The three accomplices had found themselves in 1978 around the musical comedy Starmania .

The operation Action Schools

Thousands of local committees are created in the French schools colleges and colleges in order to raise funds to finance microprojets precise (agriculture, pumps, etc), quantified and geographically located. The operation is an astonishing success: until 13  000 committees would have been created, according to Lionel Rotcage.

In addition, the receipts of the 45 turns the hunger y' has enough of it are assigned to the profit of Action Schools. The face has was sung by Klaus Blasquiz, Elisabeth Wiener, Serge Newtone, Jérémy, the choral society of the children of Bondy, Jean-Pierre Castelain, Emilie Bonnet, Salif Keita, Olive with a speech called by Philippe Bauman. The face B on the same background music, recited by Richard Berry, on a text of Bob Geldof.

Tons of foods and water pumps will be dispatched under the vigilant eye of the artists. An innovation for the time: the schoolboys and high-school pupils could follow the projection of the achievements thanks to the Minitel.

According to Lionel Rotcage (responsible for Band Aid in France), it is to follow Action Schools that Daniel Balavoine would be turned over to Africa where it found death: To say that it is me which advised to him to follow until the end the operation while going on the spot, in Africa, to join Thierry Sabine and Paris-Dakar. It left. I did not even on the occasion to say to him that we were with 13  000 committees in the schools. I awaited his return, on January 19th, for learning to him. It would have been happy to know it even if, for him, which imported, it was what that would start in the long run, in the years to come, on the behavior of the children with respect to the others.

Action Schools and the song Babacar

France Gall went to the Senegal for the operation Action Schools. While returning, it is very upset by the history of a eighteen year old young mother, Fatou, which had required of him to collect its one month old baby because it could not raise it. It had been given up by the father. She wanted to entrust this child to him, that she adored. France Gall set out again without him to give answer and that tormented it. The history finishes well since while going back to Senegal for the clip of this song, it found the mother and the baby in good health and decided, with Michel Berger, to help them in their finding an apartment, financing the studies of the mother and the future of Babacar.

France Gall will sing in 1987 the song Évidemment writes by Berger, in homage to Daniel Balavoine. This title is reproduced on the album Babacar .
