Actes Sud
Actes Sud is a founded Publisher in 1978 close to Arles.
History
At the beginning, and following the example Workshop of cartography set of themes and statistics (ACTS) from which it resulted, it settled in a sheep-fold of the Paradou, village of the Vallée of the Beams, where the founder, Hubert Nyssen, assisted of Christine Ox, was joined by those which today direct the company: Francoise Nyssen, Bertrand Py and Jean-Paul Capitani. In 1983, Actes Sud emigrated in Arles with the locality “Méjan” - today place Nina Berberova, in homage to an author whose discovery was important for the leading development of the house.
At the beginning, this decentralized situation caused comments, because it did not correspond to the French tradition marked by the Parisian grouping of the literary publishers. But, since then, the generally accepted idea according to which was played there an opposition to centralist hegemony disappeared, the chart of the French edition has itself evolved/moved and, in 1987, Actes Sud opened offices in the 6th district of Paris.
Today, Actes Sud, whose catalog counts nearly 5200 titles, gathers a team of more than one hundred ten collaborators of which good number share their activity between Arles and Paris. In addition, a score of advisers external and a pleiad of translators are distributed in all the France, and for some abroad.
After some first tests in the Years 1990, Actes Sud launched in 2005 a collection of cartoons. This initiative was crowned by a certain critical success, concretized by the price of the best album of the festival of Angouleme 2006 decreed with Gipi for Notes for a history of war .
The company also has a subsidiary company called Actes Sud Junior , specialized in the edition of works of literature for youth. It is directed, since 2007, by Thierry Magnier. Actes Sud publishes also various discs.
