Acid jazz

The acid jazz (also called groove jazz ) is a musical style which combine influences of Jazz with elements resulting from the Soul music, Funk, Disco and Hip-hop. The acid jazz takes its rise in the years 1980 and 1990, initially with London thanks to labels like Talkin' Loud, then in the whole world.

History and evolutions

The Acid Jazz appears in 1987 with the creation of the label éponyme by DJ English Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller. These two last had met during the evenings of Nicky Holloway entitled " Special Branch". This movement constitutes in fact a federation of urban tribes revolving around the Hip-hop, of the Funk and all the other defectors of the Rhythm' N blues and the Pop of the " Mods " joined together to introduce a Jazz distant from that practiced by the representatives of the kind into the Great Britain of the years Thatcher.

More than one musical style strictly speaking, the acid jazz would be thus, according to some, " the expression of excluded from the festival such as people of the London West-End conceived it who practiced racist filterings to preserve an asepticized festive space, characteristic of Darks Années 1980."

With the beginning of the year 1990 public, wearied by the years 1980 (" desert créatif" according to some) and its " microphone-tendances" all marked by the sound of the Synthetizer " icy-glamor" , turns to the revival and the heat of the groove . It is the live rebirth of the sound, the vocal performances, the ternary rates/rhythms clean to the dance which, less used during the years 1980, which wish " ringardiser" in their turn the Eurodance and the posture Post-punk of the Neo-romantic (New-wave, Cold-wave and others, born from the genius of Joy Division). Thus years 1990 see the assertion of a new tendency, represented by musicians who, under the name of the label of Eddie Piller (Acid-Jazz), try to join again with the roots of the jazz while returning his vocation to him first: to dance without forgetting to think. " With jazz thing" , as Guru of Gangstarr will protest it. I.e. a music which wants to be neither reserved with the intellectuals and schoolboys of the thing-jazz, nor delivered to the scatterbrained Dance and the market of the disc. Before the House does not become the band of the middle of the years 1990, the acid-jazz indeed was the one time old song (falls of the Berlin Wall in 1989, " fin" East-West tensions, return to the world growth…).

For some, years 2000 seem to have eclipsed the acid-jazz as a kind because they play the revival of the eighties. The amateurs are interested in the experiments of the Londoners of Belleruche (pet of the Jazz-Coffee with Camden Town), to the mix of Jazzanova, Dea Davenport of return with Brand New Heavies, with the return to the scene of Incognito.

Musical characteristics

A typical group of acid jazz generally includes/understands a rhythmic part (low Guitare, Electric guitar, battery) and of a part “coppers” (trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone, etc), accompanied by an instrument with keyboard (Fender Rhodos) and by the Chant.
