Achilles Zo

Jean-Baptiste Achilles Zo, known generally like Achilles Zo , is a French painter of Basque origin (Bayonne 1826 - Bordeaux 1901). He is the father of the painter and engraver Henri-Achilles Zo (1873-1933).
He was pupil of Thomas Couture and lived in Paris until in 1871. He was principal of the fine arts of Bayonne (1871), then of that of Bordeaux (1889).
Very productive, it specialized in paintings with topics " exotiques" : bullfights, scenes of Spain, women of North Africa.
It is represented with the Musée of Orsay, in Paris, and especially with the Musée Leon-Bonnat of Bayonne.
