Achilles Guénée

Achille Guénée is a Entomologiste French, born on January 1st 1809 with Chartres and dead the December 30th 1880 with Châteaudun.

It makes its studies in Chartres where it is interested very early in the butterflies, advised by François de Villiers (1790-1847). It comes to study the Droit to Paris, then is registered with the bar. After the death of his only son, it resides at Châteaudun in the “Chatelliers”.

During the war of 1870, Châteaudun is burned by the Prussians but it finds its intact collections.

He is the author of 63 publications, some with Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel (1774-1846). He signs in particular his Species of night the (six volumes, 1852-1857) belonging to the Suites in Buffon . This work of almost: 1300 pages treats Noctuidae world.

It takes part in the foundation in 1832 of the entomological Société of France and after its president in 1848 becomes about it then honorary member in 1874.
