Acclaim Entertainment

Acclaim Entertainment is a North-American company of development and edition of video games.

Founded in 1987, this company develops and distributes its plays on many supports, among which one can quote the Megadrive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game GEAR, BORN, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation and PlayStation 2, Xbox and to a lesser extent the personal computers. In the Years 1990, Acclaim also manufactures its own portable electronic game. Its success enables him thereafter to acquire independent studios of development such as Iguana Entertainment and Sculptured Software.

Many plays of Acclaim are laid off products, based on Comic S , televised series or films. Acclaim is also responsible for the adaptations on consoles of some plays of arcade of Midway, like the series Mortal Kombat or NBA Jam .

The weakening of the industry of the plays of arcade as well as the lack of enthusiasm of the public for the titles headlights of the company lead it to the loss of the majority of its licenses, to the closing of its studios of development and to its voluntary liquidation in September 2004.

In August 2005 the name Acclaim is repurchased by Howard Marks, former managing director of Activision, to base Acclaim Games, company specialized in the distribution of Asian MMORPG on the markets European North-American and .

Subsidiary companies, labels of edition

In first half of the years 1990, certain plays of Acclaim were marketed under the name of edition “Arena Entertainment” (of 1991 to 1994 only) and “The Flying Edge” for the market of the Sega consoles. LJN, a repurchased subsidiary company with MCA/Universal Pictures in 1988, has also to publish a certain number of plays on the Nintendo consoles.
