Accademia di San Luca
The Accademia di San Luca , is an association of the artists of Rome founded in 1577 and really become activates under Federico Zuccaro, its first director ( Principe ), in 1593.
It is located close to the Fontaine of Trévi.
The Academy of San Luca is always in activity and maintains the statute each artist member who is held to offer a work to the institution to perpetuate his memory. Works offered of the various members who followed one another there since the foundation, are presented inside the museum of the Academy, located inside Palazzo Carpegna .
History
It is related to the old University of the painters, miniaturists and illuminators of Rome, whose first statutes, tonic at 1478, are always preserved near the historical files of the Academy.It is the painter Girolamo Muziano who is elected to bring together the painters and sculptors affirmed to ensure the foundation of the Academy. Its intentions are to raise the work of the artists since the simple craft industry.
October 13rd, 1577, the pope Gregoire XIII authorizes the institution of it, by annexing to him the religious congregation under the invocations of the same saint, the Luc evangelist, after his nomination like patron saint of all the painters (according to the texts, Saint Luc is the author of the first portrait of the Virgin Mary). During its first years, association remains under the papal patronage, which dominates and controls all the institution.
Following the concession of the church of Martina Saint wanted by the pope Siste IV in 1588, the academy and the congregation are transferred in the final crowned building and its additional buildings, the palazzo Carpegna, close to the Roman Forum.
The organization of the institution really develops thanks to Federico Zuccaro, which, in 1593, assumes of it the principato as director in charge of association.
The need illuminist for transforming the theoretical teaching of the schools in a more concrete transmission of the knowledge, pushes the institution of an Academy of Naked ( Accademia del Nudo ) and organizes this first level of training dedicated to the copy as a truth.
First is officially approved in 1607 and is amended during the centuries until those of today into force, which go back to 1959.
Meanwhile it became Accademia Reale in 1872 and Nazionale in 1948.
Belonged to the academic body of the famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects, in academic membership “highly skilled”: Algardi, Baciccio, Dance, Bernini, Borromini, Canova, Caravaggio, Carracci, David, De Chirico, Fountain, Guercino, Juvarra, Maratta, Nerves, Pietro de Cortona, Piranesi, Chick, Kidneys, Valadier, Velasquez, Vespignani.
Famous popes, princes, sovereigns and characters were elected as members “of honor there”.
