Academy off Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Founded the May 11th 1927 in California, the Academy off Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( AMPAS , in French: academy of arts and sciences of the cinema ) is an professional organization dedicated to the improvement of the Cinéma.

The Academy is made up of more than 6000 members, resulting from the professional world of the cinema. Although the very large majority of its member comes from the the United States, the Academy accepts the affiliation of the professionals of the cinema of the whole world. In 2004, the Academy counted among its members of the representatives of 36 different countries.

The organization is known in the world for its annual ceremony of handing-over of the Oscars. In addition to this major event, the academy rewards for the young realizers at the secondary and university levels. It also holds the library Margaret Herrick with Beverly Hills and the Pickford Center for the Study of the Cinema with Hollywood.

The current president of the AMPAS is Sid Ganis.
