The Academy of old music ( Academy off Ancient Music ) is a unit specialized in the interpretation of the traditional Baroque music and of 1600 to 1850 on old instruments.

History

Founded in 1973 by the Harpsichordist Christopher Hogwood, the Academy takes again the name of an institution of the 19th century, established with London in 1726, of which the goal was to play of the old music. It is devoted to the Baroque music and traditional. The instrumentalists are specialists in the music of whom play on instruments of time. Manpower vary according to works.

The Academy of old music is in residence with the Université of Cambridge.

Musical direction

The musicians are directed, according to the habit of the time, by the harpsichordist, placed at the center of the unit, or by the First violin. In this case, the unit was directed in particular by the Violoniste S Simon Standage, Rachel Podger and Andrew Manze.

Since April 30th, 2006, it is the harpsichordist Richard Egarr who took the succession of Christopher Hogwood.

In 1996, Paul Goodwin and Andrew Manze was appointed associated chiefs, and, since 2003, the orchestra also worked with a certain number of chiefs invited such as the violonists Giuliano Carmignola, Pavlo Beznosiuk, Masaaki Suzuki and of the chiefs of chorus such as Stephen Cleobury (with the chorus of the King' S College of Cambridge), Edouard Higginbottom (chorus of the new university of Oxford) and Stephen Layton.

Repertory

The Academy is one of the first whole of the world which played on historical instruments. Its concerts on the six continents and its 250 recordings, since its creation, show its preeminence for the music of the period 1600 to 1850, of Monteverdi to Mendelssohn. The current orchestra is particularly famous for its innovative recordings with Christopher Hogwood, for the firm Decca. The orchestra was the first to record all the symphonies of Mozart on instruments dating from the time of the type-setter. It since recorded the concertos of piano and all the symphonies of Beethoven, and partly the symphonies of Haydn, like all the concertos for piano of Mozart, with Robert Levin.

Under the direction of Christopher Hogwood, the academy also carried out a certain number of recordings of opera, in particular with the close cooperation of Cecilia Bartoli. These recordings, rewarded, include the Clemenza di Tito , Orfeo Euridice , and other operas of Mozart, Haydn or Haendel.

The season 2005-2006 includes two programs baroques with Richard Egarr, of the concertos for violin of Mozart with Giuliano Carmignola in Europe and with the United States, and other projects concerning Mozart, led by Paul Goodwin.
