Academy of the littoral

The Conservatory of the littoral , of which official name is the Conservatoire lake space Littoral and shores , member of the World Union for Nature (UICN), is a French public corporation created in 1975. It follows a land policy aiming to the final protection of natural spaces and the landscapes on the maritime and lake shores French and can intervene in the coastal cantons in metropolis, the Overseas departments, with Mayotte, and recently with Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon. It also intervenes in the bordering communes of the estuaries, the deltas and the lakes of more than 10 square kilometres.

It acquires fragile or threatened grounds, by amicable agreement, by pre-emption, or exceptionally by expropriation. The academy of the Littoral French acquires each Twenty to 30 km ². Goods can also be to him given, bequeathed or be the subject of dations in payment of the death taxes.

After having completed the repair work necessary, he entrusts the management of the grounds to the communes, other local government agencies or to associations so that they ensure of it management in the respect of the formulated guidelines. With the assistance of specialists, it determines the way in which must be arranged and managed the sites that it acquired so that nature there is as beautiful and rich person as possible and defines the uses, in particular agricultural and of leisure compatible with these objectives.

It is a single public corporation, which does not know an equivalent in other country, if it is not the National British Trust , association of private law founded in 1894 and who inspired the creation of the Academy of the Littoral.

The January 31st 2005, the Academy ensures the protection of 732 km ² out of 300 sites, representing approximately 861 km of maritime shores… and nearly 100.000 hectares in 2006 (for 880 kilometers of maritime shores). The Academy of the littoral acquired approximately 660 km of coasts in Metropolitan France, that is to say 12% of the total. Its objective is to acquire 1/3 of the French littoral. Its annual budget is about 30 M€, including 25 M€ devoted to the acquisition and the installation of the sites. The essence of these means comes from the State. In 2007 according to the Prime Minister, it profited from the entirety of the right of Francization of the boats, that is to say 35 million euros per annum. Various local government agencies (common, areas) and the Europe bring also their contest. Companies patrons and private individuals also make voluntary contributions.

The team of the national Academy of the littoral includes/understands a hundred people, with the royal Corderie with Rochefort, Paris and the seats of the regional delegations. Recruitments are carried out especially among the civils servant.

150 guards of the littoral, recruited by the administrative local government agencies and organizations, to which approximately 300 Employment-youths are added, ensure, throughout the coasts, the monitoring and the maintenance of the sites of the national Academy of the littoral.
