Academy of philately
The Académie of philately is a philatelic association French created in 1928. Its members give each other for goal promotion of philately and the philatelic studies. Enough independent, it is not member of the French federation of philatelic associations (F).
The seat of the Academy is with the Musée of the Post office, Rue of Vaugirard to Paris, for the opening of which the Academy militated. The library of the Museum of the Post office was made up starting from the bottom of the Academy and is accessible freely to the public.
The emblem of the Academy is the Cérès drawn by Jacques-Jean Barre.
History
The May 25th 1928, Gaston Tournier, the editor association of the philatelic Messenger , lance the project of a made up Academy philatelists with competences recognized. The readers are invited to vote for the 25 founding members by referendum, without pre-established list.The December 19th 1928 takes place the inaugural session of the Academy of philately. The 25 elected officials lay down the rules of election of the academicians: the regular members, of French nationality, 40 and are named by co-optation. 30 foreign members are also created. Thereafter, the statute of corresponding member is created who becomes obligatory to be able to claim with establishment. The members are appointed for lives, but can withdraw themselves if they estimate not to have time to take part in the acivities of the Academy. For them, was established an honorary statute of member.
To militate for the creation of a postal Museum and to help to constitute its collections and its library, was one of the principal public acts of the Academy.
Activities
The Academy of philately meets for philatelic conferences and marcophiles. It takes part in the congresses of the French federation of philatelic associations.Since 1959, its members publish a quarterly review, the philatelic Documents . In 1968, the first volume of a Encyclopédie of the postage stamp is appeared, followed by a second volume in the form of booklets.
Each year if a participant the merit, the Academy gives of the prices to philatelists non-member of the institution:
- the literary prize (given as from 1930) reward the best philatelic work of the year,
- the philatelic price (given as from 2001) reward the best philatelic exposure of national competition at the time of the congress of F,
- price Internet (given as from 2001) reward best Internet site devoted to philately. It was given until now only once to Robert Désert for his site on the French desks of the Ottoman Empire.
Homage
In 1978, a Timbre on stamp was emitted in France for the 50e birthday of the Academy. It represents the Semeuse of Roty and the Cérès of Bar. It was drawn by Charles Bridoux and was engraved by Claude Halley.
