Academy of Rouen
The Académie of Rouen was born from the official transformation the June 17th 1744 by letters patent of Louis XV of the meetings of friends set on Botanique being held in a small garden of the Bouvreuil suburb into Academy of Science, Belles-Lettres and Arts of Rouen under the aegis of Fontenelle and the Corner one of Cideville. The statutes of this Learned society whose abbot Legendre was the first benefactor were renewed and confirmed at the Parliament the February 10th 1757. The first director was Tiphaigne of the Rock.
Removed in 1793, the Academy was restored in 1803 by the care of the prefect of the department, the count Beugnot and Defontenay, the mayor of Rouen. The Academy recovered its files and its registers the June 29th 1803 but not its Bibliothèque or its garden. New letters patent approved, on June 1st 1804, its new payment which was confirmed the June 10th 1828.
Recognized public utility by a decree of the April 12th 1852, the Academy played a determining role in the development of the evolution of ideas to Rouen in the absence of university until in 1965.
It has today its seat with the Hotel of the learned societies of Rouen.
