Founded in 1652 by Jacques Bracing of Brieux, the Academy of Science, Arts and the Humanities of Caen is the literary first Académie in France after the French Academy.
It counted Samuel Bochart, Pierre-Daniel Huet, Segrais and Garaby of the Alfalfa among the first of its members. It will then create in 1662, four years before the foundation of the Academy of Science of Paris, the first Academy of Physics of France.
Being satisfied, to its beginnings, from reading the Gazette and discussing the news, the assembly came soon to discuss literary and scientific subjects. As of 1652, the Academy of Caen had become a company regulated with the destinies of which Bracing of Brieux will chair until its death in 1674, date on which Segrais will take the changing by accommodating in its turn the Academy at his place of 1685 until its clean dead occurred in March 1701. Jean Regnault de Segrais, it on two possible dates there: 15 or March 25th according to the source. -->
The Academy then undergoes a four years interruption until in 1705, date on which the brother-in-law of Segrais, Jean-Claude de Croisilles, offers asylum at his place to him. The existence of the Academy is also seen confirmed this year with the reception of letters patent of creation of the king under the name of royal Académie of the Humanities . Having known a new interruption following a dissension with its host, the Academy must await the hospitality of the bishop of Bayeux, Paul d' Albert de Luynes, which places a room of its palate at its disposal, to meet again. A new interruption will be caused by a new affront made by this same bishop who, dissatisfied with what the Academy had admitted of the protesting S in its center, made him a serious affront while neglecting to go to an extraordinary assembly that he had convened itself under pretext of an important business which proved to be a simple part of failures.
With the Revolution, the Academy of Caen knows the fate of all the Academies of France. On December 12th 1800 will have to be awaited so that it is finally restored by the general Dugua, then prefect of the Calvados, under the name of Lycée of academic Caen then of Société and finally of Academy of Science, Arts and the Humanities in 1801.
The Academy of Science, Arts and the Humanities of Caen was recognized of public utility by a decree on August 10th 1853.
