The royal Academy of sciences and the letters of Berlin , in the beginning Company of sciences , was founded the March 18th 1700.
The first life president of the Academy of Berlin will be Leibniz. This body whose principal members were or of people of the Refuge or the French, will be a “provincial” Academy compared to that of Paris for the very European intellectual world of the 18th century.
Frederic II of Prussia will make of it the center of the Aufklärung , version German of the French lights. The death of Sophie-Charlotte and the war of succession of Spain delayed until in 1710 the beginning of work of the Academy but, in 1744, the Academy “was renewed”. Each class met once per week; the academicians could take share with work of all the sections.
In 1746, Maupertuis and Formey were charged, one of the presidency, the other of the perpetual secretariat of the learned company. Frederic II accepted the title and fills the duties of a “guard of the Academy”; he prescribed the use of the French language substituted for Latin, and the payment, agreement with the opinions of the majority of the academicians in particular, had that the most perfect independence of the doctrines would be tolerated out of religious matter.
After the death of Maupertuis, the king directed the Academy with the assistance of of Alembert which subjected to him, of Paris, the councils of a judicious and not involved spirit.
