The academic Palmes are a French decoration (heiresses of an honorary title created in 1808 pennies Napoleon i) instituted the October 4th 1955 by the president of the Republic Rene Coty, which made following the distinction of Officer of academy created by Napoleon Bonaparte to honor the eminent members with the Université. It is about oldest of the only decreed distinctions on a purely civil basis.
With its creation in 1808, the academic palms have an honorary title reserved for the University (which then includes/understands also the colleges). There are then three titles:
It should be noted that it is only into 1866 that the academic Palms become a decoration strictly speaking. With the embroidered badge makes place a metal badge constant by a ribbon, of black moire initially then violet.

Today, this distinction honors certain members with the educative community, Enseignant S or not. The methods of its attribution were extended, in 1866, with nonteaching people having rendered services eminent with the State education, and it can, also, being granted the abroads, and to the French residing abroad, contributing, actively, with the expansion of the French culture in the world.
The promotions and nominations, taken by decree of the Minister for State education, take place twice the year: January 1st for the people not belonging to an educational establishment of the State or to a service of the Minister of education main road, on July 14th for the people belonging to an educational establishment of the State or to a service of the minister of education main road.
