The Abwehr , word German meaning “defense”, is created in 1925. It is the intelligence service German staff of 1925 to 1944.

After the come to power of Adolf Hitler, the Abwehr regularly was in conflict with the secret services of the Nazi party: the SD and the Gestapo .

Directed by the admiral Wilhelm Canaris as from January 1935, the organization can determine the nature of its role compared to its competitors, even if the competition continues in a less obvious way. Its action in the tracking of the resistant French is particularly effective.
