The abulia (of the Greek ἀϐουλία aboulía , composed of the privative prefix ἀ- ( has ) and of βουλή “will”) is a psychiatric symptom which results in an incapacity to carry out the acts however planned, and a great difficulty of making decisions.

One distinguishes the abulia from the Apragmatisme, another psychiatric symptom, in that there is no planning, nor of intention to act in the apragmatism, contrary to what is noted among patients presenting an abulia.

The abulia translates the reduction, the insufficiency even the disappearance of the will and the subject tests difficulties of implementing any action. In spite of the deceleration of its activity, the intellectual function is not reached. On the other hand, the inhibition which characterizes this pathology decreases the emotional dimension of the personality, which keeps all its clearness however.

It is a symptom found in different Pathologie S Psychiatrique S or neuropsychiatric thymique: depressive episode major, Dysthymie, schizophrenia (negative symptom), disorder of the adaptation of the depressive type primarily, but also in syndromes whose existence as an entity is still under discussion: chronic syndrome of Tiredness, burn-out .
