Abû `Abd Allah ach-Chaykh Muhammad Ben Yahyâ or Mohammed ach-Chaykh is one of the two survivors of the massacre of 1459 where the family of the Banû Wattas was exterminated by the last Sultan mérinide Abû Muhammad `Abd Al-Haqq. Mohammed ach-Chaykh died in 1504, her son Mohammed Al-Burtuqâlî succeeds to him.

Biography

Of 1459 with 1465, the sultan mérinide is still with the capacity and Mohammed ach-Chaykh is in escape. In 1465, Abû Muhammad `Abd Al-Haqq is cut the throat of with Fès during a popular revolt. A sultan of origin idrisside, is proclaimed but its authority is limited to the area of Fès. With died of Abû Muhammad `Abd Al-Haqq in 1465, Mohammed ach-Chaykh begins a reconquest of the territory of the sultanate mérinide.

In 1469, the Moslems come to lose the near total of their territories of Al-Andalus. Only the Nasrides preserve Grenade and its surroundings until in 1492. This period knows a massive surge, towards Morocco, of Moslem and Jewish Andalusians pursued by the Inquisition and the conversion forced with Christianity.

In 1471, the king of the Portugal Alphonse V manages to take Tangier while benefitting from it from the disorders of Fès. The Portuguese take Asilah, then Tangier, which enables them to control the strait of Gibraltar. Mohammed ach-Chaykh takes again Fès. The south of Morocco escapes to him completely controlled by the Saadiens. It reigns only on the area of Fès where it is the first to take the title of sultan wattasside in 1472.

In 1479, Mohammed ach-Chaykh sign a treaty with the Castilian their grateful of the exclusive rights on the African coast. Mohammed ach-Chaykh cannot prevent the installation of the Portuguese on the coasts of the country with Safi (1481) then with Azemmour in (1486). The Portuguese will occupy truly these two cities in 1508 and 1513.

In 1492, the kingdom of Grenade, last state Moslem of Spain is overcome. Kings Catholiques of Spain seize Grenade, thus sealing the end of Spanish Islam. With the end of the Reconquista, the Spaniards are tried more and more by the southern part of the Mediterranean. It take and occupy Melilla (1497).
