Abscon
Abscon|Abscon Abscon is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Its inhabitants is called the Absconnais .
Geography
Located at 20 minutes of Douai, or at 15 minutes of Valencian, Abscon has a privileged geographical location. In contact with a fast track leading to a highway, this " city in croix" is the last limit of the Hainaut and touches Douaisis. To 59 meters of altitude and populated of 4156 inhabitants, the town of Abscon extends on 727 hectares.
This city, known as in " croix" , is described according to 2 convergent roads with the " 4 chemins" delimiting the center town then. Mining cottages, installed because of the old mining activities, or trade extend from share and others of these 2 main street of which a Main road.
History
40 million years ago , an inland sea recovered Abscon and its surroundings what explains its calcareous basement.
At times of the Romans…
At that time the commune is surrounded by an immense forest. When the Romans invade the area, they settle in the old residences given up by the Gallic druids. They notice that they are well protected by wood surrounding and call the " place; Abscondinium" , " Absconditum" meaning " caché". Archaeological excavations made it possible besides to discover a temple druidic and Gallic burials. With the wire of the ages, the word is metamorphosed and becomes Ascon in 1103, Abscons in 1349, Abescon in 1700 and finally Abscon.
The village is évangélisé in IIIème century by Saint-Piat, time to which Rome sends apostles in Gaules: those found many monasteries where the monks work with the evangelization and claim then, assistance and protection with the lord who dominates the country.
With the Middle Ages
Towards 630, Adalbaud, Count of Douai, found the abbey of Marchiennes. When he dies assassinated, its wife who remarie not, takes refuge with the monastery of Marchiennes. Become Holy-Rictrude, it bequeaths all its goods (of which Abscon and the grounds which surround it) with the aforementioned abbey. Abscon carries the armorial bearings besides from there. In XIè century, Abscon is set up in parish. The church is dedicated to Saint-Brice which is always the owner. One century later, the village counts approximately 80 inhabitants. It burns in 1340, during the Guerre One hundred Year old, burnt for half by the Residents of Douai, combined of the French and for other half by the garrison of Bouchain.
Of Charles-Quint to the French revolution
Located in a frontier zone, Abscon is several times set fire to because of frequent wars. During 80 years, the village is occupied by the troops of Charles-Quint.
In XVIème century Abscon takes importance as a rural grouping: in 1553, one counts 180 inhabitants (for 36 hearths) mainly grouped around the church and along the axial way leading to Mastaing and Marquette.
At the dawn of the Revolution, the population practically doubled and on January 8th, 1790, the parish of Abscon which becomes a commune, passes from prévôté from Bilge to the district of Valencian.
the XIXè century: industrial rise
With the opening of the Pit of the Thought , the year 1822 inaugurates a news ère.
In 1830, the startup of the Fosse Saint-Marck then in 1856 that of the Puits Casimir Périer cause an important increase in population and modify the aspect of the village, in particular by the construction of the first Corons. The combined presence of the coal, lime and the main road bring in 1833, the establishment of a sugar refinery. Recovery by Mr. Delloye in 1913, this one closes its doors in 1963. In 1841, the city is connected to the railroad of the North of Somain. In 1854, a glassmaking, is also established near the Fosse Saint-Marck and functions to the paddle of the first war mondiale.
In 1886, one inaugurates the town hall.
Abscon through the XXè century
In September 1914, German installs an airfield to the current site of the Cité of November 11th and Résidence of the water Tower . October 18th, 1918, Abscon is released by the Canadian troops. Years 1920 see the rebuilding and the massive arrival of the Polish emigrants come to replace the mining labor disappeared at the time of the Great War. The village continues its extension by the construction of the Cité of the Limekiln .
The Fosse of the Thought is abandoned in 1928 and is used as return of air to its neighbor the pit Casimir Périer , before disappearing and being embanked in 1950.
From 1956, the programme of improvement of the habitat results in the construction of schools, new allotments and a water tower. At the end of 1968, the Fosse Saint-Marck is in his turn fermée.
After one period of industrial decline which lasts nearly 15 years, Abscon increases and is embellished. The old church built in 1892 and closed with the worship in July 1969 due to mining depressions is replaced by a new building inaugurated in 1981. The restoration continues in January 1989 by the opening of a new administrative center then by the enlarging of the school complexes, the construction of sports hall, of a new gendarmerie, Cité of the Alders , of the Sycamores , of the Acacias …

Charles Van Coppenolle: Minor with the pit Saint-Marck, it engages in the army in 1913. Lieutenant in 1916, it removes with his company the Death-Man with Verdun. He then receives the Military Cross and appears in the magazine the illustration . Become lieutenant-colonel, it enters the Résistance during the Second world war and takes part in many battles, in particular in Syria. Elected official mayor of the commune in 1959, it dies on October 15th, 1968.
