Abrest is a common French, located in the department Allier and the area Auvergne.

Geography

Located at 4 km in the south of Vichy, accessible by RD 906 or the MINOR ROAD 426 (via the camp-site).

History

Civil architecture

Vestiges of the castle in the borough: turn-pigeon, rebuilt part XIXe. Castle of Chaussin XVe, restored (IMH): ditches, Gothic chimney, 2 chimneys Rebirth, remainders of murals. Castle of Quinssat XVIIe. Medieval tower of Maubet

Mentioned in XIIIe. Old parish of the diocese of Clermont, strengthened at the end of XVIe.

The name of “Abrêt” is mentioned for the 1st time in 1301 in the “Dictionary of Mr. Chazaud”

Activities of the commune:

  • the vine:

The commune was one of principal the locality of the old wine coast with Vernet, Creuzier-the-Old man and to a lesser extent, Saint-Yorre and Cusset.

The professional work of the vine perduré until the beginning of the XXe century.

The small village of Biernets (which was written “Biernay” at the XVIIIe century) was the principal wine borough of the commune. A strong proportion of vine growers was noted (up to 70% of the inhabitants about 1750, as well as additional activities like cooperage).

The bench of the grape harvest was still announced about the middle of the 19th century. Most of the coast St Amand and hill of Dollots were covered of vines. The “street of the vines” and the “way of the barrel”, are the remaining witnesses of this activity.

Today, the vine did not completely disappear, it is cultivated still a little by places and especially there remain about it innumerable seedlings disseminated in nature and the ditches!!!

  • the port:

Abrest had a small port on the Right Bank Allier. The “dead end of the old port” in door still testimony. This port undoubtedly lived by an important wine traffic.
