Aboubakr Jamaï

Aboubakr Jamaï is a Moroccan journalist born in 1968. He is the former director of the French-speaking weekly magazine the Weekly Newspaper and his fellow-member Arabic-speaking person Assahifa Al Ousbouiya.

Biography

Aboubakr is the son of the journalist and politician istiqlalien Khalid Jamaï, the grandson of the resistant Morrocan Bouchta Jamaï and the nephew of the journalist Jamal Berraoui.

In 1992, it obtains the diploma of the Institute of higher learning of Trade and Administration of the Companies of Casablanca. At its exit of the institute of trade it Co-founds Upline Sécurities a company of Moroccan purse. It then begins its career in the financial field before converting with journalism, which explains its choices of publication and articles, directed trade.

In 2004, it is allowed in “World Fellows” of the Université Yale, an exotic program aiming at forming the future world elite!

Career of journalist

November 17th, 1997 Aboubakr Jamaï founds “the Newspaper”, first weekly magazine Moroccan to adopt a very critical tone with regard to monarchy, of corruption, the army and the violations of the human rights. In 2000, “the Newspaper” is interdict after the publication of a file implying the Moroccan left and the Prime Minister for the time in the coup d'etat of 1972 perpetrated against the king Hassan II. To continue to appear Aboubakr Jamaï launches at once the same publication under a new name the Weekly Newspaper. “Assahifa”, the version Arabic-speaking person of the title undergone the same fate, it is started again under the name of “Assahifa Al Ousbouiya”.

In 2001, Aboubakr Jamaï is condemned for slandering towards the Moroccan minister for the foreign affairs Mohamed Benaissa following the publication of an article showing this last of corruption. For the Moroccan journalist, this lawsuit was justified by an attempt at intimidation of a publication which dared to publish investigations without concession and leading.

In 2003, the Comité for the protection of the journalists allots the international prize of Freedom of the press 2003 to Aboubakr Jamaï.

April 13rd, 2006 Aboubakr Jamaï and one of its fellow-members, Fahd Iraqi, are condemned to pay the sum record of 3 million Dhs (290 approximately 000 Euros) for slandering towards Claude Moniquet, director of strategic matter the European council and analysis, research Center (ESISC). the Weekly Newspaper questioned the objectivity of the one of the report/ratio of the known as center in connection with the Sahara.

At the beginning of January 2007, Aboubakr Jamaï denounces a lawsuit “radio-controlled” by the Moroccan authorities and is declared in the incapacity to pay the punitive damages. January 18th, 2007 Aboubakr Jamaï announces that it is constrained to resign of its functions to the Weekly Newspaper and to leave the publication. Condemned to personal capacity and in the incapacity to pay the fine, the authorities could have seized the goods of the newspaper if Mr Jamaï were maintained in his functions. A press campaign (and of blog) as well national as international, echoed this resignation, underlining the concern of the observers on freedom of expression in Morocco.
