The Abodrites (or Obotrides) trained Slavic people , near to the Vélètes, established at the 6th century in the areas known today under the name of Holstein and of Mecklembourg, in the North-East of the current Germany.

Abodrites are implied in wars with the Danish kings between the ninth and it twelfth century, for supremacy in the Baltic. During the same period, they convert with Christianity under the influence of German missionaries. They also fight against the Francs and become their tributaries.

In 1170, they recognize the suzerainty of the Saint Germanic Roman Empire. The area knows a fast germanisation then, even if the majority of the villagers continue to speak a Slavic dialect until the end about the fifteenth century.
