Abilene network

See also: Abilene

The network Abilene is the Dorsale Internet the United States installation by the community of the Internet2. It offers an high banc to more than 220 institutions members which are mainly Université S, but also of the associated companies and institutions, which extends through all the American territory, one finds it as well with Washington as with Puerto Rico.

Overall picture

When it was set up in 1999, the Abilene network had a capacity of 2,5 Gbps. In 2003, a handing-over on level came to increase this flow with 10 Gbps, the completion of the latter was announced the February 4th 2004.

The name Abilene was selected because of its resemblance to the terminus of Abilene to the Kansas, which in the Années 1860 represented the Frontière of the United States as regards railway Infrastructure of the country. The ambitions and objectives of this new network are thus similar to those which had been carried out at the time. More particularly, one of the objectives of the project is to obtain a flow of 100 Gbps between each node from here the end 2006. By keeping the analogy with the railway network, the term National LambdaRail (NLR) is given to the regional fiberoptic networks which provide a connectivity OC-192 to the Testing ground of '' Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure '' (HOPI).

The relation of the Abilene network with Internet 2

Had with the recent series of lawsuits launched by RIAA against students of universities related to several important participants of the Abilene project, a new tendency was formed through the media, that to refer to a network named “Internet2”. Certain information sources go so far they imply that the Internet2 is a network entirely distinct from the network current Internet. It is acted in fact of a mistake since Internet2 is in fact a consortium and not a data-processing network. It is possible that certain information adopted the term of Internet2 because it seems to be a logical name to indicate a Dorsale Internet of new generation. The articles which refer to Internet2 as a network make in refers to the network that they indicated formerly under the name of Abilene network. This network with high banc was deployed using several technologies developed by Internet2 (the consortium). Abilene, although being a private network used for education and research, is not a completely isolated network, since its members regularly provide alternative accesses to some their resources on public Internet network. Abilene is technically not part of Internet network since it is not connected to this last.

Future of Abilene

The Abilene project is actively constant by Qwest Communications which places at the disposal their networks of fiberoptics. The agreement between Internet2 and Qwest for the Abilene network is supposed to end about October 2005.

The official site of Qwest, one of the major participants in the Abilene network, holds a very good FAQ which clarifies the distinction between Internet2 and Abilene.

At the end of the day, it is expected that Internet2 and National LambdaRail amalgamate.
