The first attested settlement of the island goes up with the Neolithic : they are tribes originating in Carie. At the beginning of, the Ionian ones settle there. During the medic Wars, Myconos accommodates the general Perse Datis, of return of Marathon. According to Eschyle ( Persians ), the island is with the hands of Persians in 885 av. J. - C. Thereafter, Myconos belongs to the Ligue of Délos, within which it pays a tribute of a talent and half, thereafter reduced to a talent. Because of its proximity with Délos, the island is used as a basis of supply for the latter. The temple of Apollo with Délos thus has grounds in the south-west of Myconos.

Pline the Old one specifies in connection with the island: “Mycone, with the Dimaste mount, with: 15000 steps of Délos”.
Under the Roman , Myconos becomes a free port, and develops in a considerable way, before knowing a certain decline under the Byzantine Empire.

In 1207, Myconos is taken by the Venetian brothers Ghizzi, who preserve it until in 1390. In 1537, the island is devastated by Khayr AD-DIN Barberousse, corsair with the service of Soliman the Magnificent the. Myconiates become in their turn corsairs, thus developing an important navy of war.

The island took part in the Guerre of Greek independence by providing ships to the admiral Emmanuel Tombazis. It resisted an Othoman punitive forwarding thanks to its local heroin Mando Mavrogenis, buried on Paros.
