Abengourou

Located at the east of the Ivory Coast at 6,73° northern latitude and 3,49° western longitude, at the border of the Ghana, Abengourou is the stronghold of the people Agni. People originally resulting from the Ghana, Agnis migrated towards the Ivory Coast with the great group Akan.

The name “Abengourou” comes from the expression “EP kro” meaning in Ashanti (language of the Ghana) “I do not like the palaver”.

The population of Abengourou is estimated in 2004 at 105.000 inhabitants.

Education

The department comprises 139 public schools and 20 private schools to ensure primary school education. It also counts 31 centers of Alphabétisation of the adults.

Administration

A law of 1978 instituted 27 communes of full exercise on the territory of the country.
