Abencérages

The Abencérages or Banû Sarraj (or Abencerrajes ) are a tribe Moor of the Royaume of Grenade at the 15th century, established in Spain since the 7th century.

She was opposed to that of the Zégris or Zésrites; the quarrels of these two factions ensanglantèrent Grenade of 1480 with 1492 and hastened the fall of the kingdom.

The legend

According to Gines Perez De Hita historian of the end of, whose testimony is disputed, thirty-six Abencérages would have been exterminated by Boabdil, last king de Grenade ( Historia of mow will guerras civil of Granada , 1604). This “extermination” in a blood bath is the subject of an anecdote related to the room located at the south of the course of the lions in the palate of the Alhambra which bears their name: The fountain of pageantry did not let any more run water, but their blood… . It is also told that an love affair between the sultana and Abencérage would have waked up the anger of the Sultan.

François-Rene de Chateaubriand wrote in 1826 the Adventures of the last Abencérage . It is a fiction reporting the adventures of a survivor of the Abencérage family after the catch of Grenade in 1492.

Washington Irving in its Tales of Alhambra ( Bruise the Alhambra off), denies any reality with this massacre of Abencérages by Boabdil

It seems that the origin of this legend comes from a confusion between Mohammed XII az-Zughbî ( El Chico ) (death in 1528) more often called Boabdil and Its `D Al-Musta `in ( Ciriza ) (death in 1465) which actually made carry out in 1462 two of the most eminent family members. There is another possible confusion between Mohammed XI ( El Chiquito ) (death in 1455 killed by Its `D Al-Musta `in) and Boabdil ( El Chico ). This event is not dated by Gines Perez De Hita and the number of killed varies according to the sources: thirty-six, according to Gines Perez De Hita, thirty-seven.
