Abel Janszoon Tasman , navigator Dutch, born in 1603 with Lutjegast, province of Groningue, dead on October 10th 1659 with Batavia (current Djakarta, Indonesia).

It is especially known for its voyages between 1642 and 1644 with the service of the “ Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie ” the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Eastern Indies, on mission for the account of Antonio van Diemen, during which it discovered the islands of what it named “Van Diemens Land” in 1642 (the Tasmanie) and the current New Zealand). He also was the first European known to see the Fiji islands in 1643. Tasman, its Visscher navigator, and its Gilsemans merchant charted also consequent parts of Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands.

During its first voyage (1642 - 1643), Tasman sailed of Batavia (current the Jakarta) with two small boats, the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen , initially towards the Mauritius then towards the east. It thus missed Australia, which it sought to reach, but discovered the island of Tasmanie. He baptized it Van Diemensland , but the British gave him later the name of that which had discovered it, Tasmanie. After a short exploration of the island, it continued to sail towards the east, and discovered New Zealand, which it called Statenland , thinking that it was connected to a piece of ground in the south of the South America. Then it sailed towards north along its Western coast. Passed the northern point of the southernmost island, it dropped anchor in a bay, where at the time of the only meeting that they had with the Maori S, four of its men were killed. It called the place Moordenaarsbaai (in Dutch: bay of the murderers) (it is current the Golden Bay ) and carried on his road towards north, but missed the Détroit of Cook, which separates the septentrional island from the southernmost island, and concludes from it that New Zealand was to probably form only one ground mass. During the return voyage towards Batavia, he still discovered the island of Tonga.
