America

  • Swedish who had adopted a particular calendar, counted one day in advance on the Gregorian Calendrier. In order to fill this shift, one decides to add one day additional to this already bissextile year; there was thus a February 30th in Sweden in 1712!
  • the British Thomas Newcomen and John Cawley develop a Steam engine also called “atmospheric machine”, used to pump the water of a coal mine of the Staffordshire. The output remains very weak. Improved by James Watt, it will become the steam engine.
