AbeBooks is the largest bookstore on line in the world with the historical figure on Internet of 100 million new, old, rare books and of occasion put on sale by more than 13.500 booksellers partners of the whole world. The company is based with Victoria with the Canada and has its European offices with Düsseldorf in Germany. Created in 1995, it launched its Web site in 1996. The salesmen pay a month's subscription to place their books on the sites AbeBooks, the variable price between 15 and 300 EURO, according to the number of pounds put on line. The Web site is available via five specific platforms per country: AbeBooks.fr for France, AbeBooks.com for the United States, AbeBooks.co.uk for the United Kingdom, AbeBooks.de for Germany and IberLibro.com for Spain.

Business model

The model is to support the independent bookstores vis-a-vis the chains and to provide a range of services which remain usually only available to large companies. These services make it possible the independent ones to compete with the large bookstores. The purchasers who visit AbeBooks do not see only one retailer of book; they see a network of independent booksellers, whose great majority are small companies. The booksellers download their inventory with the database of AbeBooks, indicating information on each book including/understanding the condition of the book and its price. The booksellers can download their inventory by using their own software or by the application software of AbeBooks named HomeBase. AbeBooks one of the five companies called at the time of the World Summit Awards in Geneva and was indicated among the best sites E-business in 2003.
