Abdul Rahman Arif

Abdul Rahman Arif (Arab: عبدالرحمانعارف) (born in 1916 and dead the August 24th 2007 with Amman, Jordan). He was president of the Iraq April 16th 1966 with the July 17th 1968.

This soldier of career supported the military Coup d'etat carried out in 1963 by his brother, Abdel Salam Aref. His/her brother appointed it chief of Staff of the Iraqi army. With died of his brother at the time of an accident of helicopter, he became temporary president of the Iraqi republic. But three days later, of the military chiefs supported it so that it can remain at the position of president.

It was appointed president by the revolutionary Council, overall and in spite of its nationalism, it followed the same policy as his brother. The July 16th 1968, whereas he slept, he is reversed by Ahmad Hassan Al-Bakr, member of the Parti Baath. The coup d'etat was accomplished after its Minister for defense, Hardan Al-Tikriti telephoned to him to announce the news to him. After the blow, it is exiled in Turkey.

It returned to Iraq in 1979, at the time of the accession to the capacity of Saddam Hussein. However, it was absent from political life and public Iraqi. The government allowed him to leave the country, so that it can make its Pèlerinage with Mecque.
