Abd Allah (Tahiride)

`Abd Allah Ben Tâhir was the governor Tâhiride Khorasan starting from 828 until its death in December 844. It is undoubtedly most famous Tâhiride.

`Abd Allah started by being with the service of his/her father Tâhir Ben Husayn, by pacifying the territories of the caliphate following the civil war between the caliphs (and half-brothers) Al-Amîn and Al-Ma' mûn.

Of 824 with 826, it succeeded his/her father in the post of governor of the Djézireh (Mésopotamie), with like objective the neutralization of the rebel Nasr Ben Shabath. He convinced it to go.

He was then sent in Egypt to put an end to a rebellion. He reconquered also Alexandria which had been taken seven years front, by Moslem refugees coming from Andalusia. After their expulsion, they had moved towards Byzantine Crete where they had established the first Arab domination.

Although `Abd Allah was named governor of Khorasan in 828, it arrived at Nichapour only in 830. In the interval it had had to cut down several revolts:

  • It was indicated to fight the Khurramite Babak.
  • It accepted the order of going in Khorasan to fight the Kharidjites.
His/her brother “Ali occupied, by interim, the post of governor jusqu `so that `Abd Allah arrives at Nichapour.

During its reign it was necessary to reinforce the borders with its territory. It took foot in Transoxiane while being based on the force of its vassal Samanides. The latter controlled the trade between the Central Asia and the caliphate, particularly that of the slaves Turkish. Muhammad Ben Al-Qasim, a Alide, tried an insurrection in the Juzjan, `Abd Allah succeeds in making it captive (834).

With the west and at the same time, `Abd Allah renta in conflict with the governor of Tabaristan named Mazyar Ben Qarin. `Abd Allah claimed to be the suzerain of this province and required that the tribute poured with the caliph pass initially between his hands. On its side, Mazyar Ben Qarin wanted émanciper supervision of Tâhirides and continued to pour the tribute directly with the caliph. Mazyar was a recent convert narrowly combined with the Zoroastrien S of the province, it was taken and sent in Iraq where it was carried out. Tâhirides quietly settled in Tabaristan until the revolt of the Zaydites in 864.

Later, in the Arab literature one made `Abd Allah Ben Tâhir the model of the advised and equitable governor. It appears that in the fields of agriculture and the economy, the provinces under its responsibility were particularly prosperous.
