Biography

His/her father left him a pacified state, of which he inherited at the thirty years age. Patron and guard of Arts and the Letters, he will be regarded as the Head of Moslem State more cultivated of his time. These qualities combined with the peace of the emirate enabled him to develop Andalusian civilization, with the poête and large Musicien lutist Ziryab. Its court was most brilliant among all those of Europe: it attracted there the scientists and the poets of the East like Abbas Ibn Firnas.

In spite of the political competition which opposes it to Baghdad, Abd Al-Rahman II sends a large scientist in Mésopotamie, to seek, buy or recopy scientific works translated from Greek or the Persan one. It pensions astronomers and doctors richly. Having a right of pre-emption on all the imported goods, it sometimes happens to him to grant audience to merchants recently made of Arabia or Byzance, to see itself offering their most invaluable books. The goods more the appraisals and most dearly paid in Andalusia are then the rare books.

During its reign, certain Christians opened with the Moslem culture and arabisèrent themselves, to the great displeasure of the episcopal hierarchy and the Christians more the extremists. The latter did not hesitate to be offered as martyrs by sowing the disorder, disturbing the prayers in the mosques or taking with party the Islamic monks, striking them and insulting them. Abd el-Rahman then his/her son had to repress these disorders hard.

The rise of Andalusian civilization empécha not the emir to reorganize the army and to take the necessary measures to face the incursions Vikings. One of their fleet took, plundered and set fire to Seville during seven days: the Arab army reacts promptly and crushed the Normands on November 11th, 844 in the south of the city. To avoid the future raids, it ordered the construction of turns of guets, fortresses and a fleet of war. A new raid Viking was tried into 859: they tried an unloading in Galicia, which was pushed back, skirted the coasts until the Guadalquivir, where they ran up against another army, cross the Straits of Gibraltar to join Murcie, where the Moslem fleet ran forty later Drakkar S. One century, the failure of another raid still showed the effectiveness of the provisions taken by Abd el-Rahman.

The end of its reign was disturbed by the intrigues in connection with its succession. It had had forty-five son, and the two principal factions supported respectively Muhammad, the oldest son, and Abd-Allah, the son of favorite, Tarub. The conflicts went until an attempt at poisoning of the emir. Finally, it was Mohammed who succeeded to him.
