Abbey of the Mount of Cats

The abbey of the Mount of Cats or Holy Abbaye Marie of the Mount of Cats is an abbey Trappist installed on the Mont of Cats, on the territory of Godewaersvelde, in French Flanders (Nord-Pas-de-Calais)

The abbey produces in its small Fromagerie the Mont of Cats, whose sale ensures the abbey the essence of its resources.

Beer Trappist of the Mount of Cats

It is in 1847 that a forging mill and of a brewery are installed in the abbey. In the beginning brewed for the personal consumption of the monks, like all the Trappists, the brown ale, strong and tasty is appreciated by the visitors, and the marketing of beer starts. The brewery is modernized in 1896 and in 1900, the seventy Trappists of the abbey employ about fifty laic workmen who assist them.

Following the laws of 1901 and 1904, a good part of the monks takes refuge with Watou in Belgium, in a farm where they installed an abbey which they called Refuge Notre Dame of St Bernard , where they were going to take again their brewery activity and to create the St Bernardus.

The production of beer ceases in 1905 with the abbey of the Mount of Cats, of which the monastery, and the brewery, are completely destroyed by a bombardment in April 1918. The forever rebuilt brewery.
