Abbey of Weltenbourg

The abbey of Weltenbourg (in German Kloster Weltenburg ) is a monastery Benedictine located on the the Danube at Weltenbourg in the district of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany.

First foundation

The abbey is located on a peninsula in the the Danube called Weltenburg Narrows or. The monastery, rested by monks Irish or Scottish around the year 620 is famous to be the oldest monastery in Bavaria.

The Cloître of the monastery is surrounded by constructions Baroque the S, most remarkable of those being the church of the abbey, dedicated with holy George which was built by the Frères Assam between 1716 and 1739.

The abbey was dissolved in 1803 at the time secularization of Bavaria.

Second foundation

The August 25th 1842 the abbey of Weltenbourg was refondée as a Prieuré of the Abbaye of Metten. It was member of the Congrégation of Bavaria of the Confédération bénédictine since 1858 and was high with the row of abbey on a purely clean basis in 1913.

The Brewery of the abbey of German Weltenbourg (: Weltenburger Klosterbrauerei ) is the oldest brewery of monastery of the world, having begun its activity in 1050. The beer " Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel " accepted world Award of beer in 2004 like better beer Dunkel in the world.
