Abbey of Saint-Jean-of-Vines

Abbey of Saint-Jean-of-Vines , founded in 1076 by Hugues the White. It is located at the south-west of Soissons, France, on the hill Saint Jean.

The principal church was destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century in order to be used for work of restoration of the cathedral. Only the frontage remained upright. It dominates the town of Soissons today.

As for the superb monastic buildings, they were mainly destroyed by the army which occupied the site after the revolution, and more recently by the combat of 1871 and the First World War. Substantial remainders of which the storeroom and part of the cloister is to be visited.

In the chapter of the destruction, the abbey was devastated by the hugenots in 1567, the canopies and the sculptures destroyed, the devastated furniture and rich person library.
