Abbey of Prémontré

Old the abbey of Prémontré , located at a score of kilometers in the west of Laon in the Aisne, was rested by saint Norbert de Xanten. It is advisable to distinguish it from the abbey of Prémontrés of Pont-à-Mousson in Meurthe-et-Moselle and other abbeys about the Prémontrés.

To the 12th century, the bishop of Laon Barthélemy of jur. gave to Norbert a ground in the Forêt of Voas (Saint-Gobain) to the locality “Presmontré” to found its community there. What it did in 1120 and two years later the April 28th 1122, Barthelemy de Lisiard (the bishop of Soissons) devoted the church. The community took the name of Prémontrés or Norbertins .

Bought by the department in 1861, this abbey is currently a psychiatric hospital and only a small portion of the buildings is accessible to the public.
