The history of the abbey is punctuated by violence: it is ransacked then rebuilt several times. The monks were the subject often of persécussions and underwent the repeated attacks of bands of plunderers. The abbey is finally burned by the troops of Oliver Cromwell in 1652.
Mac Carthy, O' Sullivan and O' Donoghe, three big bosses of clan, are buried there, as well as large poets of the Comté of Kerry of XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries, such as O' Donoghue, Aogán O' Rathaille and O' Suilleabhain.
Today, the abbey, although not having more roof on its major part, is relatively well preserved. One of its curiosities is its Cloître arched Gothic, Norman and Romance style, organized around an interior court which shelters a large yew several times centenary.
