Abbey of Hérivaux

Hérivaux is a variation of the commune of Luzarches, in the department of the Val-d'Oise, located at orée of the Forêt of Chantilly and at approximately 30 km in the north of Paris.

History

In 1140, Ascelin, known as “the Hermit”, lord of Marly-the-City leaves its castle of Marly and is withdrawn in this place then inhospitable ( locum horroris and vast solituninis ) baptized Herremivallis , the valley of the hermit.

Joined by other companions, they clear the ground, located in a wooded depression forming small valley in which run several sources, and found the abbey of Hérivaux which will become parish at the 13th century. The history of this abbey is deeply related to that of the village close to Fosses.

With its death, in 1188, the bishop of Paris Maurice de Sully declares the place canonical institution and the new abbey of Hérivaux is attached to the order of Saint-Augustin.

The prosperous abbey, touched the benefit of four cures, Saint-Etienne de Marly, Saint-Etienne de Fosses, Saint Nicolas's Day de Bellefontaine and Midsummer's Day de Montepiloi, to which the incomes of two priories and very many fields in Île-de-France were added.

With the Revolution, the national Bien is acquired on November 1st 1796 by Benjamin Constant which began its political career as mayor from Luzarches. The religious church and buildings are destroyed on its order except for a partly saved wing, the southern house, which it is reserved to place there its mistress Madam de Staël. In Hérivaux, Constant writes political reactions and Of the effects of Terror . It resells the property of Hérivaux - too expensive to maintain - the March 22nd 1802, and buys the property of the Pastures (disappeared today), close to Saint-Martin-of-Hillock with orée of the Forêt of Carnelle.

There remains of the old abbey of Hérivaux the ruins of the church of the 12th century, and a conventual building of the 18th century. This last, called the “castle of Hérivaux” was increased in 1934 by the Huaud architect of two side fore-parts. The “castle” was recently transformed into apartments of great standing. The garden was arranged in 1913.
