Abbey of For the third time Doest
Ter Doest is a Abbaye located in the old Belgian commune of Lissewege, on the territory current of the town of Bruges. The abbey played a big role in the empoldering of areas in Flanders, Zealand (see Saeftinghe) and in Holland and in the trade of the Laine with the Flemish cities.
Lambert, the lord of Lisswege which resided at Upperhof, gave in 1106 a field with a vault to the Bénédictins which founded an abbey there. In 1175, it was taken again by Cisterciens originating in the Abbaye Notre-Dame of the Dunes of Coxyde, with which it was amalgamated in 1624.
The barn of 1250 is the only remaining building it is 50,50 m long, 23,75 m broad and the ridge is to 30,75 m in height; the height of the walls under the roof is of 9,25 Mr. Two lines of ten pillars in oak support the frame in oak. Until 1711, the roof was out of thatch, it is now in tile of Boom.
Willem van Saeftinghe, Lay brother of the combattut abbey at the time of the Battle of the spurs of gold in 1302 in the camp of the Flemings. It would have désarçonné the French commander Robert II of Artois.
