Abbey of Corbie
The abbey Saint-Pierre de Corbie is a monastery Benedictine founded in 657 by the queen Bathilde, mother of the frank king Clotaire III. By the production of sound Scriptorium and the activity of its missionaries, she played a leading role in the Carolingian Renaissance.
Foundation
The Bathilde queen imagined as of 650 to convert into abbey the fort of Corbie dominating the valley of the Sum. The first abbot, Théofroy, a monk of the Abbey of Luxeuil, took his functions into 657-58. According to the tradition bénédictine, the monastery formed from the start of the monks well-read men, such Leutcharius, Abellinus and Martin de Corbie who was tutor of the future intendant of the palate, Charles Martel. Théofroy had as successors Adélard de Corbie (the founder of the abbey-sister of Corvey in the Rhineland), Wala, and the theologist Paschase Radbert.
Scriptorium
The library of Amiens holds several manuscripts carried out in scriptorium of the abbey of Corbie, which was, with that of the Abbaye of Fulda, one of most important of the Middle Ages. The monks reflect there at the point a famous writing, the Minuscule Caroline of Corbie. A big number of manuscripts seems to be produced under the direction of the librarian of the abbey, Hadoard. Among the texts of Antiquity preserved by the work of the monks of Corbie, one finds:- the Vaticanus Latinus 3864 , single witness of the speeches of Salluste
- the Laurentianus 63,20 , containing the text of the third Decade of Tite-Live
