Abaye

Abaye (" small père"), of its true name Nahmani Ben Kaylil , of large a Babylonian Amora born in is the nickname 278 EC. Orphan, it was raised and educated by his uncle, Rabba bar Nahmani, Rosh Yeshiva of Pumbedita, which, not being able to be solved to call its nephew like his father, the affubla of the nickname.
Abaye respected his/her uncle enormously, and diverted it while juggling, brings back the Guemara to us.

Abaye was a Cohen (a priest), going down from the family of Eli (cf Livre Samuel), and as such, victim of the curse of God uttered in their opposition in punishment to the desecration of the Divine Name caused by the fixed prices to Pinhas and Hofni, the wire of Eli. Because of this one, it could not live its cash of years. Its virtuous nature enabled him to live up to 60 years, but he died at this age, relatively young for the time, of an edema in 338 or 339. In addition, its life was hard. With the image of Rabbi Yehoshoua Ben Hanania, it was ugly and poor, charming people by his wisdom, studying the Torah at the end of harassing days with labor with ungrateful grounds, or during the two months of Babylonian agricultural dead season, the Yar' He Kala , the Mois of Married the , this one being (the study of) the Torah

It made its studies near his uncle and of Rav Yosseph bar Hama with the Yeshiva of Pumbedita, and quickly became Master as well in the study as in the teaching of the Torah. It became acquainted there also with Rava, which, according to an old habit of Wise of Israel became its more savage contradictor at the same time as his dear friend.

" disputes" between Abaye and Rava (Havayot de Abaye veRava) became the prototype of the dialectical tournaments as well on the large ones as on details, even what Anouar el-Sadate would call (a few tens of centuries later) of the " hitches talmudiques" , and are so important for talmudic knowledge that another anachronism reported without Soukka 28a teaches us that Rabban Yohanan Ben Zakkaï, disciple of Hillel and founder of the school of Yavne, knew all Halakha " until the debates of Abaye and Rava".
Although Abaye holds an undeniable control in the dialectical analysis of the halakhic sentences , Rava exceeded it and the opinions of Rava overrode those of safe Abaye in six exceptions.

Abaye became director of Yeshiva de Pumbedita with died of its Masters.
Il was never as happy as when one of its disciples supplemented the study of a mishnaïque treaty . On these occasions, it organized a great feast, although its means were reduced and that the wine never appears on the table (Traité Shabbat 118b).

It defended the book of the Ecclésiaste against its Master Yosseph bar Hama (Ecclésiaste thus not having been included yet in the biblical Canon at that time). By quoting a number of passages extracted the book, it showed that it was not about a book heretic, and even made admit with its Master whom these quotations could advantageously be used for homiletic aimings (Treaty Sanhédrin 100b). Thereafter, Ecclésiaste became the privileged reading with Soukkot.
