Abarth

Abarth , company founded in 1949 with Turin by Carlo Abarth was, at the origin, specialized in the preparation of cars manufactured in great series, especially of the models FIAT. The success of the productions of the company and its fame is due to the mufflers, produced for a great number of other cars, in particular FIAT, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Simca and Porsche.

The symbol fetish of the company, which will be also included in its logo, is the scorpion, sign of the zodiac of its founder, and decorated all the cars of competition of the mark, of which first carried out on the basis of model Cisitalia.

The company will remain independent until 1971, year when it was taken again by the giant FIAT Auto. From this moment there, Abarth became the reference of the sporting versions of the various marks of the group, and in particular Autobianchi. An important collaboration intervened as of the preliminary draft with Lancia, in collaboration with the Pininfarina body, for the realization of Lancia Rally 037.

The racing stable Abarth was sold with Enzo Osella.

Abarth becomes then officially the department “sport” of the head office FIAT.

Thus certain models FIAT (Lancia and Autobianchi also since pertaining to FIAT) Co-were signed Abarth.

The most famous Abarth developments were the FIAT Abarth 595 S and 695 S. The last car in which Abarth collaborated was famous the Autobianchi A112 Abarth.

At the beginning of year the 2007 direction of FIAT decided to start again the Abarth mark with the Grande Punto Abarth, which takes again the prestigious name of the department sport of FIAT.

Other versions will follow like new the FIAT Bravo and 500 which will have a mechanics of 130 cv.

Beginnings of Abarth

The shortly after the second world war, the economy of Italy like almost all the countries having taken part in the conflict, knew difficulties and in particular the sector of automotive engineering. Many marks had not survived the six years of war. The competitions were strictly controlled and limited. It is at that time that the Cisitalia mark appeared and had associated competences of a young preparer. After the disappearance of this manufacturer, Abarth re-used some unsold Cisitalia cars which it repurchased. Its main activity and funding source for its division preparation and races were the production of accessories like the famous mufflers Abarth. It is starting from the transformation of famous FIAT 600 that the transformations and Abarth developments acquired their noble letters and their reputation.

First transformations and " Dérivés"

Carlo Abarth, as he liked to dédinir himself, was a true creator of cars " worked out but not préparées". It is indeed grace uax kits of transformation for the FIAT 600 qu ' Abarth made its more not towards the way of glory. This idea came to him whereas it presented to the press the first badgée mass-production car Abarth, the " FIAT 600 derivation Abarth 750".

As one imagines it with the reading of his name, the first intervention was carried out on the cubic capacity, while maintaining the establishment mechanical and all the principal somposants of the truck of series, even the hull, which, for example, in the aerodynamic special version fitted with body by Pininfarina, establishes several international records.

Cars

The first FIAT Abarth derived from normal FIAT 600 particularly famous and were appreciated by the young generations of the time, the FIAT-Abarth 750 whose production began in 1956. Very quickly the kit of transformation was marketed for the motorists most raftered and wanting to operate directly on the car.

With the end of the year 1960, Abarth began manufacture from Abarth 850 TC (Turismo Competizione), which will remain with the catalog until 1966.

FIAT provided directly to Abarth the FIAT 600 without certain mechanical parts, (driving shafts, brakes, carburettor and exhaust) which were assembled directly in the Abarth workshops at the time of the transformation of 600 into 850 TC. Foot-note : Abarth 850 TC is not a FIAT 850 transform but a FIAT 600 receiving an engine increased to 850 Cm3.

During 1962, two versions of the 850 were carried out:

  • the TC Nürburgring, whose engine developed 55 cv CUNA to 6500 rpm. This version was built to celebrate the victory obtained in 1961 by Abarth 850 to the 500 km of Nürburgring,
  • the TC/SS, whose engine developed 57 cv CUNA to 6500 rpm. Towards the end of 1962, this version was renamed " 850 TC Nürburgring Corsa".
