A software package is a commercial Logiciel sold by a editor in the form of a complete product, more or less turn-key . The term results from the contraction of the words produced and software (Mot-valise). More recently free software packages, developed by communities of users appeared.

This neologism was created in 1973 per Jean-Erick Forge, founder of the CXP. The initial definition was: “Together finished and defined including/understanding one or more programs, the documentation and conditions of support, conceived for the realization of one or more definite functions and that a user can buy with a guarantee of the salesman”. In January 1974, the Official journal (considering the decree n° 72-19 of January 7th, 1972 relating to the enrichment of the French language) published a list of words and proposed the following definition: “Together including/understanding a program, test decks, documentation corresponding and likely to be provided to several users”.
The word was deposited with the register of the marks by the author and immediately given to the public by way of press in order to guarantee its free use.

This term is opposed to the developed software in-house in a company to fill of the functions to measure.
The cost of implementation of a software package (primarily of work of installation and parameter setting) can be regarded as being less low than the complete development cost of an internal solution to measure. Moreover, the times of implementation of a software package are controlled better (than the development delays complete of a solution to measure) and the complexity of the Projet is some theoretically decreased.

The complete software package includes/understands:

  • software components (for example in the form of CD-ROM);
  • a documentation in line and (or) printed;
  • of the training courses;
  • possibly an assistance with the installation, the parameter setting and the implementation;
  • possibly an hotline;
etc

The term is very often employed for professional software used by companies. Often, it is a complete unit composed of several modules, covering each one a function and communicating between them.

The software packages implemented in the Entreprise S cover mainly the great following fields:

  • ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning (in French: PGI or business package integrated) - This category of tool integrates all the computerized systems allowing to help work in the company. One often finds there the invoicing, the production assistance, accountancy, etc It exists a distinction between vertical software packages (clean with a specific trade, for example building, doctor's office…) and horizontal , in which the treated functions are generic.
  • CRM - Customer Relationship Management (in French: GRC management of the client relationship) - Gathers all the tools making it possible to integrate the customers in the information system of the company.
  • SCM - Supply Chain Management - Gathers all the tools making it possible to integrate the suppliers into the Information system of the company.
  • RH - human Stock management.

Windows and the continuations Office automation S such as Word, like certain more technical software like PACBASE or DB2 and others DBMS, are sometimes regarded as software packages (undoubtedly wrongly because they do not treat a function trade of the company).

Stages of installation of a business package

The choice of a business package (of type more or less wide PGI) begin with a comparative analysis from the market offers, in general in answer to a Schedule of conditions worked out to formalize the needs for the entreprise.
Once the choice carried out, the principal stages of installation is the following ones:
  • analyzes variations between the Information system existing company and the functionalities offered by the software package, these variations can give place:
    • with organisational adaptations of the management styles of the company to conform to the specifications of the software package ( to adopt the software package, it is the solution to privilege to benefit from the advantages of a software package). It is this need for adapting the organization to the tool which sometimes makes it qualify structuring ,
    • with requests for evolution or installations of the software package formulated with the editor ( to adapt the software package), or, when the source code is known, to in-house modifications,
    • with developments of interfaces between the software package and the peripheral applications;
  • definition of the parameter setting necessary to the various modules of the software package;
  • Specification S of the evolutions and specifications of the interfaces;
  • specifications of the rules of taken again and transcoding of the data (of the old applications towards the Database of the software package);
  • realization then tests of the treatments (evolutions, interfaces, taken again data);
  • preparation of the actions of led change :
    • staff training,
    • communication near the personnel, of the customers, the partners or suppliers,
    • revision of the process and the organization;
  • Homologation (or: certification, qualification; the terms vary according to the context) in real size with the defined parameter setting, with the taken again data, the interfaces and evolutions, etc
  • repetitions or simulations of the operation of rocks which allows the passage of the old system new;
  • and finally, rocks final on the new software package, generally at the time of a weekend to avoid disturbing the operation running of the company too much.
