A abacus is the upper part of the capital column S, to which the Architrave relates. It is named differently trencher .
In the beginning, it was about a square terra cotta shelf or of wood that the former manufacturers placed above the wood columns to give them a broader plate and to provide thus more support with the beams than carried these columns.
