Abachi
The abachi ( Triplochiton scleroxylon ) is a African tree of the family of the Sterculiaceae. It is found Senegal until in Angola. Sometimes qualifé of “African maple”, this tree has a denomination which varies according to the countries: “obeche” (Nigeria, francized in “obèche” or “obéché”), “ayous” or “ayus” (Cameroun), “wawa” (Ghana) or “samba” (Ivory Coast).
The abachi pushes quickly and produces a light wood of a pale yellow. The tree can reach a 55 meters height with a right trunk of a diameter of two meters and a length of a score of meters. Its wood is in particular used in the construction of the Sauna since it does not retain heat and does not produce splinters. It is also employed in stringed-instrument trade and in the manufacture of furniture.
